Subject: Greenheads
I was down in holgate 2 weeks ago and the greenheads were nasty!! We got tore up. How are they now? In holgate? Or along the other beaches?

My brother-in-law and friends were surfing there a couple of days ago and said it was like a horror movie. You stick your head above water and it gets swarmed. Landing on your eyes, lips, yowza... horrible.

Regarding other beaches... I had to kill one annoying one on the beach today in Barnegat Light, but that's not to bad.

Holgate is always the worst place on the island for greenheads since it is right next to the wildlife park. The workers at the little store there wear hats with pictures of greenheads on them... they take a certain pride in their south-end bugs.

Been here all week in BH. Killed maybe 6 all week. I thought their would have been more yesterday - not much of a breeze on the beach- but nothing.

The flies usually come when the wind is coming from the bay. This is not usual, but does happen once in a while. The most common days on LBI have winds going north or south.

So when you see the lifeguard flags blowing toward the ocean, you are going to be visited by the green ones.

You should have taken your $5 beach badge to Loveladies. They allow that badge but don't allow greenhead flies on their beaches!

Holgate-and more so the further south you go- always seems to have a problem with the flies. Those boxes they install did help, but it's hard to fight mother nature. If you drive down a few of the streets you will see a lot of porches and decks that are screened it......that's a dead tell that there is a big problem with bugs.

is there anything good the greenheads do? my daughter asked me that last week when all sorts of insects were blowing in from the west in Surf City.

These miserable creatures do a number on ya when the breeze is from the bay or no breeze at all. If you rent by the water thats part of the package. They usually get you when your on ground level. if you have a second floor deck or higher I rarely have a problem with them. Use skin so soft mixed in a spray bottle with water. Spray yourself, under your umbrellas on the beach and carry a fly swapper in your bag. If you go in the water you will have to re apply the spray. Have a good vac. at least your there while the rest of us are working.
