Subject: ductless air conditioners
I have a cape and the 2 BR upstairs get unbearably hot. We normally put in window a/c units, but, can't stand the loud compressor noise anymore. Has anyone had the ductless air conditioners installed? About how much for just the 2 BRs upstairs? And, anyone have recommendations on who to use? Thanks!

are you talking about the portable AC units that sit on the floor and the duct goes out the window. I am curious about this as well as we are thinking of getting a unit for our large family room in a very old beach house. We put up with the noise from the portable window units because it does get so hot at night. Can't help you with that!

No, the units I'm asking about are permanently installed in the wall of each room and are connected to a small compressor outside the house... almost like true central a/c but without any ducts.

I had Sanyo units installed on my old house and they work great. Very quiet. You can get a double hookup so only one outside compressor has two feeds (rooms). My guess is you are looking at around $4-5k for two rooms. For our vacation home we are currently looking at a Mitsubishi ductless heat pump system. Pretty neat setup that will give us central heat and air with no ducts.

Thanks, local guy. But, yikes, did not expect to cost that much... thought maybe $2-3k. Assuming that your house is on LBI, who did you use and would you recommend them? Plus, the ones with the heat sounds very tempting!

Before you get scared of the price I would talk to an installer. My Sanyo was a bigger system and it's hard to break it down. My Guy no longer accepts new work but Airtech (www.airtechnj.com) is local and does this work and are good people so I would call them.

I have installed two of these ductless systems and I think they are a great alternative. I have a Sanyo and a Mitsubishi and personally don't see a great deal of difference between the two. The Mitsubishi is a 3 ton unit and cools about 1,000 sq feet. One thing-if you are looking at the second floor you may be able to install ducts in your floor and get AC on both floors. I would suggest asking the contractor that question. As for a recommendation, I would try DGS Refrigeration out of Barnegat. Good luck and stay cool!! :)

I had Mitsubishi installed in a 3 bedroom 1800 sq foot house 9 years ago. The cost was around $7000 They work great no mess, hardely notice them on the walls. We used Walt Mccollum in Manahawkin. Very reliable. i have used him several other times for plumbing issues and never had a problem

Thanks, everyone, for your input and referrals! Spoke over the phone to 2 other contractors and both said about $5500 just for 2 BRs. I can't justify paying that much, so, will just have to put up with noisy wall units :(

Not sure why your window units are so loud. Perhaps buy new ones. Their are many models out there that are super quiet, efficient and kick on only when their is a temp demand.
