Question:
Asked By Joanne on March 13, 2010
Subject: Is/was the island closed last weekend?
OK, bear with me. We have had a house on LBI for 40 years, and my dad told me that the island was 'closed' to oncoming traffic last weekend and probably this weekend due to flooding. Dad is getting a bit senile, so I don't know where he got this information,(house is only used during the summer months). Sometimes he just makes things up because of his Alzheimers. Is there any truth to the island being closed?? Our house is in BB, and I am concerned now that I should come down to check on it. Can someone comment on the island conditions today? Thanks

I just got back from the library in Ship Bottom (2 PM Saturday) and everything is fine. It's blowing like crazy and pouring rain and the tide is high when it should be low, but so far no flooding. If anything the flooding will occur tonight but the rain will be finished by then. The beaches are probably taking a beating however.

There is a lot of wind and rain down here today. The Blvd is flooded but still ok to drive on in Beach Haven Terrace. They will/do close the bridge sometimes and I would expect there is a chance they might close it today due to the winds and tide. I agree with Dave that the beaches are getting hit hard.

The 9th Street bridge into Ocean City is closed. Maybe he heard that report.

"Overnight rain closed down the 9th Street bridge into Ocean City and caused some flooding along areas of the shore resort town, according to the Ocean City police department."

Theres probably a very good chance that the bridge will be shut down with the coming high tide. My concern is that the island has not had enough time to bounce back from the two Nov. storms. Any place where the dunes are in bad shape will be dangerous for the island.

I'm sitting here oceanside in NBH a half hour before high tide. The surf is right up to the dunes. You can only be out for a few seconds because you will get sandblasted. The worst seems to be over, however. Earlier, I saw power lines arcing and cable wires down. We still have power, though. Winds are slowing down a bit. The Blvd. has a lot of flooding.

Was in LBI yesterday. The bridge was not closed however, needed to be very carefull driving. The bridge is under construction and there is one lane open on each side of the bridge going east and west. The barriers that are blocking the other lane were all over the the road. The wind was wicked and saw some flooding in the north part of the island as well as a couple areas around shipbottom and suf city. The bay looked like waves. The electric went on and off in my house for only a
minute. Signs were bending and shaking all over the place.I am sure the slight flooding I did see has gone down by now and drained. I do not know how the beaches look, it was nearly impossible to take a walk there to check it out. Hope this is helpfull.

Sunday morning website report from Press of Atlantic City:

"On Long Beach Island, Long Beach Boulevard was closed at 8 a.m., around high tide, in Beach Haven from 13th to 31st streets, police said. The boulevard remained closed, but police said the water was receding and the road was expected to reopen this afternoon."

It's bad on the beach. 30 years of sand from dunes have washed back into the ocean. There are several areas where the ocean flowed under homes during the storm and there are zero dunes. Other areas have beach/street walkovers with 15-25 foot drops. Beach street blocks were covered in sand from where the ocean cam through.

This was just the latest in several storms that have eroded the beach. Getting them ready for the summer will be a serious challange for sure.

Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain,
For we've received orders to sail back to Boston,
For never amore shall we see you again.

We'll rant and we'll roar, like true Island natives,
We'll rant and we'll rave across the Barnegat Bay,
'Till we strike soundings far off the coast of this sandbar,
From Barnegat Light to Nantucket is such a long way.
We hove our ship to, with the wind at Noreast, boys,
We hove our ship to for to take soundings clear.

The first land we made was an inlet called Little Egg, but the soundings were bad.
Next Morrison's laid empty and Bill thought it sad.
We sailed then to Southwick's and found Dave and Donnie inviting.
But, there was no room for our 42' Viking.

Let every man here drink up his full bumper,
Let every man here drink up his full bowl,
And let us be jolly and drown melancholy,
Drink a health to each jovial an' true-hearted soul.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, and God Bless Long Beach Island; the land of my youth, and most fondest memories.
