Question:

Subject: Paver installation
We own a house in Beach Haven & would like to have a paver patio installed in the backyard, along with small stones surrounding it. We have a ton of mosquitoes in the summer which render the backyard almost unusable and we hope that by installing pavers & stones this problem will improve.
I have been having a hard time finding any sort of recommendations for companies that do quality paver installations, although almost every house seems to have pavers somewhere on their property. Does anyone have a contractor they've used & would recommend? We got one estimate that ended up being twice what the contractor originally told us it would be, so we're looking elsewhere.
Thanks in advance for your help.

From other posts I have seen here you must be carefull as to how much square footage is pavers, asphalt, etc... The town will dictate this. You may want to call your town for starters.

The one contractor we spoke with checked with the town & we are well within the limits they've set. We were initially concerned about the amount of coverage allowed, but now we know that won't be an issue. We certainly do not want to paver over the entire property, just have a patio installed surrounded by permeable stone.

I do not believe that pavers will have any impact on the mosquito population.

There is a pest contol company called Ozane in Ship Bottom. I used them for bees and it worked. You can use them one time or get an annual contract. I don't know about mosquitos; but maybe you can call them to find out. That maybe another alternative for you.

I used Marvins Lanscaping for a paver walkway. They did a beautiful job, good price, very fast. (609) 361-7273.

We used Tom from Brick-It. We had admired several of our neighbor's pavers and we were given Tom's name. He also did some work on those new homes next to Acme. His number is 609-296-8288. We loved the job he did for us!

Actually, the quote we have is from a contractor who uses Brick-It. The price was double what we originally were told. Our contractor told us the paver company was more interested in doing bigger jobs (like the one near the Acme) rather than residential ones. We do have one recommendation from someone who lives in Manahawkin for J. Bucci Landscaping. Thanks for everyone's help.

We used Bucci and he was great, a nice guy too. They did an awesome job.

I've used Brick-it. They do a quality job that looks great. They stand behind their work for years to come. Tom is a great guy to deal with also.
As they say, "you get what you pay for". Cheap now my be more expensive in the long run.

My next door neighbor used Brick-it & was charged $7 per square foot. Our quote a year later was at $15 per square foot. The paver job they did was very nice, but we were surprised to be hit with such a huge increase in rate. That's why we're asking for recommendations of other contractors who might be more reasonable, yet who will also do a fine job. We need to at least explore other options.

I had Fosters do a walkway and planters for me at my house and it turned out great. I paid about 3k. A neighbor on the next street used Brick It and had the same work done for a total price of about 7k. I will say that the Brick It company used a better quality stone, but the work and final product both look the same and still do (3 years later). Even if my walkway needs to be replaced, I am still saving money and would have a new walkway in the future.
Also, question the price. Work is slow and people should be happy to get your call.

How do pavers make a difference when it comes to mosquitos?

We use Rich Quelch and sons, his father owns sunset? marina in branch beach. He charges a labor fee and then buys the materials. So your bill consists of the price of the materials that he payed plus his fee which is very reasonable.

Thanks to everyone for their help & suggestions. The estimate we received from John Bucci was considerably less than the one we received last year from another contractor, so we will be hiring John to do the work in our backyard. We really liked the man & look forward to working with him. He had also been recommended to us by a friend who hired him 3 years ago & who has been very pleased with the work John did.
Again, thanks to all for your help.

I thought I'd just drop a quick note back on this board to say that our new backyard is almost completed & we couldn't be happier with the job John Bucci has done. He was able to hook us up with a carpenter to build new backsteps, Homestead to put up new fencing & a new vinyl shower & a plumber to do the work, in addition to having his own crew tear up all the grass & plantings to install the pavers & river rock. Just felt that he deserved my positive comments, considering how quickly he completed the job & how beautiful it all looks. Plus we felt that the costs were quite reasonable, too. Thanks for all your input.
