How long is the island in total miles wise?

They say "18 miles", but that is not exact - I believe that it is actually over 18 miles long. I suspect that the length of the main boulevard that you can drive on is 18 miles long, but there is much more island south of mile post zero in Holgate.

This question reminded that there use to be (?) an 18 Mile Run in the fall. Does it still take place?

It's not static. I grew up negotiating Little Egg Inlet and think that I know it like the back of my hand. It's ever-changing, and returning via the Atlantic coming up the coast from the Chesapeake Bay, C&D Canal, Delaware Bay and then the Atlantic...the most challenging part is the entrance to LE Inlet. Erosion is ever apparent, and therefore the length of the Island is ever-changing. We always said it was 18 miles long, and 6 miles at sea.
