Mystic Island posted on August 18, 2010
So with this rain today my son and I took a ride to Tuckerton. Upon coming back to LBI we took a ride to Mystic Island. We went all the way to the end over 5 bridges 2 of which had lights due to blind curves. All the way at the end their is a large building- looks like a B+B? Built up real nice and looks pretty current. It has a long bridge from the main road I think it was a car bridge. Does anyone know what this structure is and what it is called? Also on this same main road (only road) looking to the southwest is an old frame only structure with a water tower. Is this an old fish processing plant or something?

Trivia/People posted on July 28, 2010
I am trying to find the answer to a trivia question. I am looking for a famous/infamous couple that was engaged on LBI. The relevant clues are:
1. Time frame between the 50's era and the 80's.
2. She was a blond actress, middle name "Dawn."
3. IF he is still alive today, he would be 55 - 65 years old.
4. They have appeared either on the big screen or the small screen.

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance and have a great day.

Cedar Bonnet Island Ditches posted on July 26, 2010
If you navigate to Cedar Bonnet Island in Google Earth and zoom in you'll clearly see what appears to be fairly significant, long, man-made ditches in the marsh to the north of Railroad Ave. Does anyone have any idea of what they were historically used for?

Ham Salad posted on June 26, 2010
Hi there!
Hope you can help me. From the time I was born til I was in my 20s, our family spent the entire summer on LBI from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
My sister and I were talking about ham salad and cant remember the name of the little place that made the most amazing ham salad(and cheese spread). We are in our 50s now so I guess the brain isnt working as well as it should LOL.
We think it's name began with an "H", 3 syllables, an old white building and it may have been German. Sissy says it was in Beach Haven but, I think it was closer to the Lighthouse. Anyone there old enough to remember??? Hope you can help an old shoebee out.
Thanks for any light you can shed on this debate!

East Coast Storms posted on June 12, 2010
Hello everyone,
I'm in the fifth grade, and I'm doing a summer paper for school on East Coast Storms.I wanted some local opinions on experiences found in 1944,1962, 1976 and 1992. My paper will include historic facts, but my mom thought that it would be a good idea to include personal experieince.
Thank you for any stories that you can tell me.

Banegat Light said goodbye to one of its own today posted on January 2, 2010
Most of Barnegat Light spent this morning at a church in Beach Haven saying goodbye to a man who spent much of his life shaping our town into what it is today. He was a tough but fair man who proved time and time again that hard work produced ample rewards. His presence will be missed by his family, the citizens of the town he loved, the fishermen who worked for or partnered with him, and even the visitors who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him at the museum, his daughter's restaurant Off the Hook, or his granddaughter's coffee shop.

Goodbye Capt. John Larson. Rest in peace.

The Shack posted on October 8, 2009
Secret admirer working to save Route 72 shack in Stafford Township
By DONNA WEAVER Staff Writer, 609-226-9198 | Posted: Wednesday, October 7, 2009 | 0 comments

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - Someone is trying to keep the old Happy Days hunting shack from collapsing into the marshes, but officials here say they don't know who it is.

They're also not sure what to do about it.

The 1920s-era shack, visible on the southern side of the Route 72 causeway bridge, has been slipping into the marsh, piece by piece.

But this past weekend, several men were seen walking across flooded marshland carrying lumber there. And inside the shack, new wood has been used to brace up the walls.

A township official said he saw the men walking toward the shack Sunday carrying lumber.

"It was about 9 a.m. when I went over to the island. I saw them walking over there. I wondered what they were doing," said James Moran, township administrator.

Mayor John McMenamin said he also noticed the new wood inside the shack.

Moran said the next step is to find out whether the men were permitted to work on the shack.

The Alliance for a Living Ocean has been doing some work in marshes around it.

ALO President Tom Beaty could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

A woman who answered the telephone for the organization confirmed the work on the marshes, but she said she had no information about whether members also were working on the shack.

Groups have tried over the years to save the shack, and this latest effort may have accomplished something, if only temporarily.

The shack has proven to be a survivor.

During the 1980s, developers wanted to build 600 condominiums on the site. The developer lost his fight with the township over zoning restrictions and sold the property to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Still, questions about who owns the actual shack remain.

Township tax records valued it at $3,400 in 2008 and list the owner as "unknown."

It has nevertheless become an icon and the subject of countless photographs and paintings.

Memories... posted on September 9, 2009
I have 35 on and off summers of Long Beach island memories. My family has been going there for over 50 years, I went in the ocean as a baby, my family once had a house in the Dunes. Later on, I would come back for a week or a long weekend. It's amazing how some things have changed so much, and other things, like the Holiday Snack Bar, are as classic as ever.

Distant Memories...

-Hartman's Amusement Park (where Fantasy Island is now)...riding the merry-go-round that had cars that you could sit in. There was a fire emgine, a moon buggy, a motorcycle and a bunch of other vehicles. I can still hear the beeping and see the flashing lights. Playing Skee-Ball in the small arcade. I still have tickets and a few tokens. Riding down the big fiberglass slide on a potato sack. Bumper cars. The Dante's Inferno haunted house ride.

-Does anyone remember a big tent that showed movies at Hartman's one summer? Faint memories of a stunt car film...

-Schooner's Wharf, post Lucy Evelyn, pre re-development, with the little buildings like the gift shop, toy store, Shell Shack, candy store...and KING NEPTUNE'S ICE CREAM with the wooden King Neptune cut-out in the front.

-The infamous Surf City trampolines. Never got hurt on them, though.

-When Hand's had two stores- one in Ship Bottom along with Beach Haven.

-Watching the sun set at Morrison's while eating dinner.

-Waiting at the door of the old Marvel's at opening to get a bag of fresh donuts.

-Buying gag gifts and other fun stuff at the Dollar Parlor in Bay Village.

-How the owner of the Holiday Snack Bar would run outside every time the fire whistle blew to direct traffic with the Beach Haven Fire Police.

-When the Acme Hotel (the Ketch to you newbies) was an empty derelict.

-Buckalew's had that curious "Tomato Pies" neon sign in the window. Pizza, that is. And when Speakeasy was the island pizza chain.

-Lots and lots of mini golf, especially at The Beacon. Supposedly the guy at Mr. Tee's was mean(!?)

-When Murphy's Market was Beall's.

-Passing the Manahawkin Drive-In at night and catching a glimpse of the movie.

-How quiet and peaceful the Island was in the offseason, after all the "tourists" went home...
