Questions about
Resident Concerns

Evacuation posted on August 26, 2011
This has really been a strange time. But I have to ask...why no reverse 9-1-1 message. Why such limited information on LBT website. Ocean Co OEM and NJ OEM websites have generic info and no specifics.

Mandatory evacuation starting at 8 AM but you can enter the Island until 4 as a resident.

Contra-Flow on Rt 72 starts at 6...most renters are gone already. There was no exiting traffic at 12:30 PM. Yet FedEx/UPS and ever other delivery besides food was prevented from entering or cancelled deliveries due to the evacuations, why, I needed something UPS was bringing for my generator. Why such confusion?

All the technology available was never put to use. The cable gov't access channel had VERY limited info.

I found out about the LBI evacuation from someone in Middlesex County because they saw it on the news.

They use reverse 9-1-1 to tell use it will snow but not that there is an evaction order and what the specifics.

I've prepared my home and I hope for the best for all but I think the local, County and State OEM's need to get their act together and provide meaningful informaion since they are not managing the pre-hurricane phase very well.

Foundation concerns posted on February 9, 2011
We bought a 35 year old house about two years ago and are starting to notice a few wall cracks and a slope on the second floor. Someone suggested problems with the foundation pilings. Has anyone has similar problems and what's involved to remedy. Do wood pilings need to be replaced after a certain amount of time?

Long Beach Township may allow residences atop comm posted on September 22, 2010
LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP — The township Board of Commissioners wants to make it easier for businesses to build residential units on top of their commercial establishments.

The board now plans to introduce an ordinance to allow setbacks for the residential units attached to commercial properties to be the same. Under current regulation, residential units must have a front-yard setback of 15 to 20 feet depending on their location, while business are required to have a 3-foot setback.
Under the proposed ordinance, business would be allowed to create residential units with the same front-yard setbacks as the commercial ones.
"We're trying to make it easier for businesses," said Mayor Joseph Mancini during the board's caucus meeting Tuesday morning. "This will allow them to make a little extra money during the off season."
"The older way of doing it made no sense," Mancini added.
The township is expected to introduce the ordinance during its meeting 4 p.m. Friday at the municipal building, 6805 Long Beach Blvd.
During the last decade, the number of businesses have decreased because business owners made more money from selling their businesses to residential developers.
About five years ago, the township put a special commission together to study changes that can be made to local codes to make it easier for businesses to thrive. Bill Hutson, owner of Lorry's Island End Motel, said the proposed ordinance is a step in the right direction.
"We have to save our tax base," Hutson said. "This is a great step right now."
Hutson said other resort municipalities have created similar ordinances to make it easier for commercial establishments to build residential units.
"Everyone is doing it," Hutson said. "There is an issue with saving businesses, and we are happy that it's being addressed."

Kayak theft in Barnegat Light posted on September 3, 2010
During the summer months, we have kept 2 kayaks on the bay beach in Barnegat Light (next to baby beach) for at least ten years with no problem. Sometime over the last couple of weeks they were stolen. It looks like there are a lot of empty spots where boats used to be. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?
