Spent a wonderful day on the island today with my almost 5 year old daughter. Collected shells, built a couple of sand castles and had a nice lunch at Fred's. Thanks to our wonderful waitress Elizabeth for letting my daughter Elizabeth play with the bucket of fun toys! We are already planning on another day trip in the next couple of weeks.

Sandy clean-up posted on April 2, 2013
Will homeowners be fined/ticketed if they haven't cleaned their properties of storm debris and sand by Memorial weekend? I'm surrounded by homes that haven't done a thing and as a result I need to have sand professionally removed for the second time.

Next week storm posted on March 2, 2013
Keep an eye to the sky and sea mid next week. Potential for severe coastal flooding similar to storms in 1962 and 1993. Jury's still out but definitely something to watch.

Electrical Wiring Damage from Sandy posted on February 4, 2013
Is anyone else who had flood damage from Sandy being told by their flood insurance company that their electrical wiring is not covered, even if the wires were submerged in salt water? My flood company says the outlets that were under water (which all of them were) are covered. But the wiring between the outlets (which runs under the floor and was totally submerged) is not covered. I'm not talking about plastic coated Romex wire. My house has the older grey cotton cloth covered outer jacket type wire, which would now be impregnated with salt. Reading my policy, I don't see that this wiring is specifically excluded from coverage. But the company is saying that because it's not specifically listed as being covered, then they won't cover it. This has to be a serious hazard and possibly could lead to a fire -- so I've turned off my electric until it is resolved.

Can the flood insurance company really just arbitrarily state, after the fact, that they aren't going to cover something in your house that was flood damaged simply because they've decided they don't want to? If anyone else has encountered this, have you been able to make any headway in getting the flood company to cover it? Anybody know of a precedent that could help justify my case? I'd like to do this without hiring a public adjuster -- or stated another way, I'm going to try to be my own public adjuster. Otherwise, I've calculated that the extra money the adjuster would get for me would only go to pay the adjuster's commission -- so it doesn't pay me to hire one.

WEAR YOUR BEACH BADGE!! posted on January 27, 2013
Hello - I have an idea that I am putting into effect immediately. For those of you that saved last years (or previous year's) beach bages, wear them on your hat, jacket, whatever! Show your support for the Island. Even kids can get in on the act! By doing so, we can spread the word the Island isn't a waste as people will comment and ask questions. Whose on board??

FEMA and other monies Questions posted on January 16, 2013
Where is the money from FEMA going?

1) Shouldn't this money be used to restore the fire department equipment and gear and repair the firehouses?

Why is a fundraiser needed for this? What if enough monies weren't raised - would we be without equipment?

2)If the FEMA monies are not directed to the right people - I see an island of many vacate businesses and homes.

Take a ride over to BHW and see all the houses with for sale by owner signs.
I guess owners gutted the flood damage and are looking for someone to take them off there hands. This will happen on the island too.

Final Debris Removal posted on December 31, 2012
LB Twp. instructed residents to have all debris curbside by December 21st. To date I still see a lot of piles which the wind and last week's flood waters are scattering all over the place. What is the township's schedule for final pick up of debris. My street, 79th, is particularly bad.
