High Bar Harbor
History
In 1904, when the Borough of Barnegat Light was established, an sedge island in the bay just west of the community was not included. This island was the home of the High Bar Harbor Gunning Club. When Long Beach Township was incorporated in 1916, the island became part of the Township.
In 1943, the Army Corps of Engineers built a dike in the bay to restrict southward drift from the tides coming in from the Barnegat Inlet. This caused a buildup of sand between the smaller island and Long Beach Island creating a connection between the two. A road was then built to High Bar. This road connects to 20th Street in Barnegat Light and is a county road.
Arnold Desiderio bought the entire area in 1953 and built the residential complex now called High Bar Harbor.
