Question:
Asked By Nikki on March 10, 2010
Subject: Day Trips
Hi. I will be making day trips on the weekends to the beach since I have a place in LEH. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations where I should get a beach badge to? I don't want to drive really far once I get off the bridge, but at the same time I don't want to be with the crowd at the base of the bridge. I know it will be crowded regardless but I figured I'd ask. Also, when does the traffic over the bridge die down on saturdays? any issues on sundays?

You can try Long Beach Township. At the Municipal Bldg (68th St., south of the bridge), they have a kiosk set up where you can buy daily beach badges that are good for either the ocean or bay. As far as traffic goes, check-out on rentals is usually 11:00 Saturday, and check-in around 2:00. So, you’ll want to come in fairly earlier in the morning, and head out as late in the afternoon as you can. Sundays should be ok.

If you don't have friends with a house, I would say ship Bottom Ave. in Ship Bottom. The "Sand Box" has showers you can rent and eat there. The food is great. Good in case you get stung by a jelly fish. It is close to the bridge though may be crowdwd.

The south end in Holgate has showers parking and bathrooms.

I would suggest you get a Long Beach Twp Badge. That way, you still have a choice and can switch up where you set up camp for the day (ex: one weekend you may want to go to the North Beach/Surf City border, then next weekend you may want to go to Brant Beach - you could do both with Long Beach Twp) Have fun wherever you end up going!!!

When entering the island, if you turn right you're in Ship Bottom. If you turn left, you're in Surf City. Each town has their own badge that is not usable anywhere else. But these two towns would be obvious choices if you don't want to drive far. Any other town would require driving furhter. So if you take the earlier suggestion of getting a Long Beach Township badge (it would not usable in Ship Bottom or Surf City), it will require you to drive further than if you went to Surf City or Ship Bottom. If you take the suggestion of going to Holgate because of the bathrooms and parking, be aware that you have to drive all the way to the end of the island.

I want to clarify something...

Above, when I said "each town has their own badge that is not usable anywhere else", I was refering to the two towns of Surf City and Ship Bottom.

Long Beach Township is comprised of several towns, so their badges are usable in any town belonging to Long Beach Township, but not usable in towns NOT belonging to LBT.

Beach Haven also has their own beach badge, as does Barnegat Light.
